Tis the Season: Three Hot Horror Movies for the Fall
by EG
The fall is always prime time for horror movies, as studios seek to take advantage of the Halloween vibe that builds as we move into October. This fall, the horror includes some tongue-in-cheek scares - Goosebumps and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, for example - but there are a few serious frights on tap, too.
The Green Inferno comes from director Eli Roth, whose horror efforts, including the original Hostel, have always been shocking and in-your-face. This one concerns a group of young activists who travel to the Amazon to help out some indigenous people, only to find that the natives are not very friendly. The film has been finished since 2013 and has had some preview screenings, but financial difficulties have kept it on the shelf until now; it will debut on September 25.
Guillermo del Toro has been more closely associated with blockbusters like Pacific Rim lately, but this fall he tries his hand at Victorian horror with Crimson Peak. Mia Wasikowska stars as a young writer who marries a 19th-century English nobleman and moves to his creepy estate. There she finds all kinds of mysterious, ghostly family secrets. The film premieres on October 16.
The Paranormal Activity franchise has seen more popular days, and this year's final installment, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, is a far cry from the minimalist sensibilities of the original. In this one, a pair of brothers find some weird video tapes that provide a link to the earlier films and a camera that seems to be able to reveal ghostly activity. This film has also been on hold since 2013, but it will finally be released on October 23.
