'Thor' Undergoes Some Changes... is Now a Woman, Says Marvel

This will cause an interesting stir...

Marvel Comics announced Tuesday that the main character in their "Thor" comic, to be released in October, will be a woman. Like, a lady Thor. Seriously. Is anyone freaking out yet? Take a breath if needed.

"The inscription on Thor's hammer reads, 'Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.' Well it's time to update that inscription," says Marvel editor Wil Moss. "The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters."

Now, before you ask - no, this does not mean Chris Hemsworth will have to star growing out his luscious locks for upcoming "Avengers" flicks. Better now?

The switch will come when the current Thor is somehow deemed "unworthy" of carrying the hammer Mjolnir, which is the source of Thor's powers. The hammer will switch to a female hand, and, voila, a new Thor is born. Her connection to Asgard will be discussed in the series, but hey, so far it makes sense.

Moss went on to clarify that this is not some knock-off feminized version of Thor we are dealing with, but the true, honest-to-thundergod Thor.

"This new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy. This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor. This is the Thor of the Marvel Universe. But it's unlike any Thor we've seen before."

Thor, some might note, is a character based on an actual (male) Norse god, but let's face it, the comics don't exactly adhere to myth as it is, so shall we applaud this as progressive?

Better yet, while certainly well endowed, we have a female hero who appears to have her chest covered! That earns Marvel a thumbs up from me.

How about you?
