'Thor' Opens Hot Internationally, 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Announces Tie-In
by EG"Thor: The Dark World" opened in many international markets this weekend, and it was a big hit everywhere, making it look as if the "Avengers" magic is still working and Marvel superheroes properties are still unparalleled goldmines. In the meantime, ABC is hoping that the magic will spill over into the TV market, as the network's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." announced that it would feature a tie-in with the Thor film in its Nov. 19 episode.
"The Dark World" opened in major markets in Europe and South America, as well as in Mexico, and took in an impressive $109 million dollars. That's well ahead of the international opening of the first Thor movie, and it bodes well for the North American opening of the movie, which happens next week on Nov. 8.
The producers of "Agents," meanwhile, explain that the series' episode titled "The Well," scheduled to air on Nov. 19, will "pick up the pieces" of the Thor movie's plot in the latest attempt to create marketing synergy between the TV series and the hugely lucrative Marvel film franchise. So far, connections between "Agents" and the Marvel films have been understated, including brief appearances by Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders in their "Avengers" characters and some plot coincidences with "Iron Man 3."
