Is This the Worst 'SNL' Sketch Ever Made?
by Andy NeuenschwanderWe've already talked about Chris Rock's controversial "Saturday Night Live" monologue, but he did something much, much worse on that very same episode.
Those who saw the sketch "The Couple" live almost immediately started branding it as the worst sketch "SNL" has ever done.
The sketch featured Rock and new cast member Leslie Jones as an older couple getting ready for a date who bicker constantly. The jokes are almost nonexistent, and when they do pop up, they're pretty far off the mark (a Left-Eye joke? It's not 1996 anymore).
The flatlining jokes were made even worse by a miscommunication with the cue cards, as Jones missed a line so badly that she actually thought she was supposed to exit the stage. She turned around and walked back on to deliver her next line, but left a pause so big you could drive a Mack truck through it.
We all know now that it was terrible. We can even agree that it might be the worst "SNL" has ever done, or at least in the top 10.
But what exactly happened?
Some have speculated that Chris Rock's team wrote the sketch. It rarely happens on "SNL," but with a host as revered in the comedy community as Rock, the writer's room might have made an exception.
Others have suggested that the sketch was forced into the show due to an Uber promotion. Viewers have noted that Uber was mentioned in Rock's monologue and at the top of the sketch (for no particularly good reason), and got a mention last week as well. Could it be that Uber paid for product placement on the show, thus forcing this terrible sketch to air despite how badly it bombed?
We might not know the answer, though it'll be interesting to see if there are any staff shakeups at "SNL" in the coming weeks.
