This 'Titanic' Fan Theory Changes Everything You Know About Jack and Rose

When "Titanic" came out in theaters, there were some fans who went to see the movie dozens of times during its theatrical run. So it's surprising, in a way, that it took this long for this fan theory to come about.

One clever fan has theorized that Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) has an ulterior motive for hitching a ride on the doomed ship and falling in love with Rose: he's actually a time traveler from the future!

You see, Jack has a few curious lines in the movie. In one, he talks about fishing on Lake Wissota...but Lake Wissota is a man-made lake that was created by the building of a hydroelectric dam in 1917.

Considering that the Titanic sank in 1912, that's a bit curious.

There's more: Jack says he wants to take Rose to the Santa Monica Pier, which isn't built until 1916. The fan also backs up his claim with other small details, such as Jack's anachronistic haircut, and explains that the fact that he has no currency could be chalked up to time travel as well. Who's going to accept money that's dated from a future year?

So, why would Jack choose to go on a ship that he knows will sink? Well, this fan explains that Jack's mission is to correct the timeline, which is corrupted by the Titanic not sinking. You see, Jack prevents Rose from committing suicide early on in the voyage...if she had thrown herself overboard, the ship would have stopped so that the crew could search for her.

If the ship had stopped, the weather might have warmed or the iceberg that the Titanic struck might have moved, which means the ship would have never sunk.

We're not quite sure how that would alter our timeline so much, but with so many people on board suriviving the trip when they would have otherwise died, we're sure the butterfly effect would be massive.
