This Clip of a 14-Year-Old Amy Winehouse Singing Is Incredible and Sad
by Andy Neuenschwander
Fans were saddened when Amy Winehouse passed away of a drug overdose, lamenting how such a talented singer could leave us so soon. After seeing a clip of Amy singing at age 14, you might feel even worse about it.
In the clip, Amy Winehouse is just 14 years old and singing "Happy Birthday" at her friend's birthday party. Everybody sings at first in the video, but Amy's voice quickly rises above as she throws in some Marilyn Monroe-style vibrato and puts on a small performance for her friend.
The clip is from the upcoming documentary "Amy," which looks back at Winehouse's life and examines a singer whose talent was great, but whose troubles were perhaps even greater. Winehouse died in 2011 at the age of 27.
"I honestly think 50 things killed her," Asif Kapadia, the director of "Amy," told E!'s Marc Malkin. "It's no simple thing. It's everything. It's her situation at home. It's her family, her relationships, it's her boyfriend, it's no self-esteem…not feeling enough love to love herself and to care about herself. Everything. And then on top of that, you get too much money, too much success. Nobody says no…Everything created a situation of this mess around her. Nobody stopped it. It went on and on and on. It got out of control. And when they did try to stop it, it was too late."
