Television Ratings: 'The Voice' Up, 'Mad Men' Down
by Shannon KeirnanGood news for “The Voice" and its network!
The singing competition has discovered that things can go on just fine without Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green on the judging panel. Newcomers Shakira and Usher have brought an unexpected increase in ratings for the NBC show.
Three weeks into its new season, the show is up 4 percent, giving it the best performance of the year—with a whopping 13.7 million viewers and a 4.9 rating among adults 18-49.
That puts it on par with last fall’s finale, which held the record as the highest-rated episode of the season.
Is the show stealing viewers from other shows? Maybe a handful.
AMC’s “Mad Men” returned for its sixth season with only 3.4 million viewers. That brought it down (slightly) from the 3.5 million who tuned in last year for the season premiere.
However, the small decrease may not equal an inevitable decline. Last year’s premiere was the show’s highest-rated episode ever, so a fall might not mean the end.
The season 6 premiere brought in 1.4 million viewers in the key demographic of adults 18-49, and 1.7 million viewers in its core demographic of adults 25-54. Though it may be down a few viewers total, season 6 stayed even with season 5 in terms of demographics.
Season 5 was the most-watched season to date, with 2.6 million viewers per episode. It was up about 15% from season 4.
So, while news that “Mad Men” audiences are dwindling, it may not mean the end for the cerebral show... but if you love it, make sure you're tuning in, just in case.
