'Ted 2' Trailer Released: Did Seth MacFarlane Just Plagiarize Himself?
by Andy Neuenschwander
Here it is: the first trailer for "Ted 2" has hit the Internet!
As the trailer reveals, this time around the Seth MacFarlane comedy will feature the titular living teddy bear marrying his girlfriend and attempting to have children. Ted's first plan, to have his buddy John (Mark Wahlberg) donate sperm, goes hilariously wrong.
So, Ted and Tami-Lynn turn to adoption, but first Ted must prove in a court of law that he's human. Cue the courtroom comedy, general hijinks, and addition of Amanda Seyfried as Ted's lawyer.
The trailer features more of what made the first "Ted" successful: banter between Ted (voiced by MacFarlane himself) and John, gross-out humor, and some juvenile antics from the foul-mouthed teddy bear.
However, there's one scene in the trailer that will look very familiar to "Family Guy" fans. In the episode "Sibling Rivalry," Peter Griffin goes to the sperm bank in an effort to preserve his sperm. Off-camera, we hear Peter knock over a whole cart of sperm samples, after which he gives us some horrified quips about how he "can feel them moving."
In the trailer, Wahlberg's character reenacts that scene almost to the letter. So one has to wonder: is MacFarlane purposely making homages to "Family Guy" or is he just plagiarizing himself? How much more of "Ted" can we expect to be rehashes of "Family Guy" jokes? The rest of the trailer seems to be clear of them, and there's definitely only so much "Family Guy" one can recreate in a live-action movie.
"Ted 2" releases June 26. Check out the trailer below:
