Supergirl Is Getting Her Own TV Show...Who Should Play the Role?
by Andy NeuenschwanderHere's some good news for those who were bummed out about the failure of the "Wonder Woman" TV show: Supergirl might be getting her own show soon!
A "Supergirl" show is currently being shopped around to networks with the hopes of premiering within the next two years. Not much is known about the show yet, but producer Michael Green, who worked on fellow DC Comics shows "Smallville" and "Gotham," is said to be on board.
That, combined with the DC Comics label, probably makes "Supergirl" more likely to land at The CW or FOX, where shows like "Arrow," "The Flash" and "Gotham" currently reside.
If greenlit, this would make "Supergirl" the fourth DC Comics show currently running (assuming those aforementioned three are renewed). That positions DC Comics well in the TV landscape, giving it a possible leg up on Marvel, who currently only has "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." but is working on shows for Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones on Netflix. Considering how far behind DC currently lags behind Marvel on the movie side, that would be a welcome advantage for Warner Bros.
If it comes into being, this won't be the first time Supergirl is seen on screen: There was a 1984 "Supergirl" movie, and more recently, Laura Vandevoort played the role on CW's "Smallville."
But who will play the superheroine? We have a few guesses:
Ashley Benson
Blonde hair? Check. Piercing blue eyes? Check. Benson got a little bit of notice for "Spring Breakers" but is still very much at the level where she might star on a CW superhero show, which don't usually pull in big-name talent.
Candice Accola
She has the look, and she's already a CW star so if the show lands there, she'd probably at least be in consideration. But she'll probably have to be done with her role as Caroline on "The Vampire Diaries" in order to have time.
Saoirse Ronan
We know she can kick ass as seen in "Hanna," and while she's naturally more of a redhead, she has the eyes. Supergirl is usually portrayed as younger, so Ronan might be a good choice if they try to make her a younger teen. Evanna Lynch of "Harry Potter" fame might also be a good choice.
Yvonne Strahovski
Her "Chuck" days prove that she can handle action, but she might be too old for this role. Still, if the show wants to cast older, she would be a great pick.
Jennifer Lawrence
Okay, so it would never, ever happen. But wouldn't she be great?
