'The Strain' Ordered for a Second Season

'The Strain' Ordered for a Second Season It's probably no surprise that FX has ordered a second season of its breakout hit "The Strain" - the drama went down as the most-watched series premiere in the network's history.

The show, which is run by Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse and brought in 12.7 million viewers for its pilot episode, will be shooting another 13 episodes. Season one is currently only halfway through, with another 7 yet to air.

It's the first original series to air on a Sunday for the network, and the first drama produced soley by FX Productions, but results are only positive thus far. "The Strain" ranks as the number one new series on cable in 2014 among the key demographic of 18 to 49.

John Landgraf, the CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions, has expressed only confidence in the show.

"We never had any doubts about 'The Strain,'" he said of the second-season pick-up. "Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cruse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward to having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo, and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale."

del Toro was equally pleased and comfortable with the news. The "Pan's Labyrinth" director co-wrote the books along with Chuck Hogan, and directed the pilot.

"I am thrilled! Another season to spread the virus," he joked. "Working with Carlton, Chuck, and FX has been immensely rewarding, and we have such sights to unveil in the upcoming episodes - the blood hits the fan on this one. Mankind becomes an endangered species."
