Stolen Car From 'Pulp Fiction' Recovered... Nearly 20 Years Later
by Shannon KeirnanAfter almost two decades, the red 1964 Chevelle Malibu that appears in “Pulp Fiction” vanished, the vehicle has resurfaced.
The convertible car, owned by director Quentin Tarantino, has just been found—19 years after it was reported stolen shortly after the film’s release.
The car, which was driven by John Travolta in “Pulp Fiction,” was found near Oakland, California over the weekend.
Sheriff sergeant Albert Anolin said the police were investigating another stolen Malibu following an arrest of a man accused of stealing classic cars in California… which led inadvertently to the discovery of Tarentino’s car.
The man was questioned but insisted that the car belonged to him since the 1970’s. When the vehicle’s identification number was checked, a second car with the same number popped up, suggesting that the car had been cloned or copied to make it appear legitimate.
“Deputy Arrieta did a really good job with this case,” Sgt Albert Anolin from Victorville sheriff’s station said. “He took what many would’ve seen as a minor case and followed it through until it broke this much larger case.”
Officials from the sheriff's department believe the car's current owner is a victim of fraud in this situation rather than the thief. Authorities were reportedly still looking to get a message to Tarantino regarding the car; no word yet on whether or not he will insist on getting it back.
The car played a sizeable role in the film. When Travolta’s character Vincent Vega takes Mia (Uma Thurman) dancing, he later crashes the car after Mia overdoses to try and get help from his friend Lance (Eric Stoltz).
