Steve Jones Unlikely to Return for 'The X Factor' Season Two

Steve Jones Unlikely to Return for 'The X Factor' Season Two We have already reported that Nicole Scherzinger's return to "The X Factor" for season two isn't set in stone. In fact, it sounds as though her job might be on the line.

But now, British news sources are also reporting that host Steve Jones is unlikely to return for season two either, potentially leaving two open spots on the show's roster.

That Jones might not return isn't much of a surprise, really. Originally, the show was supposed to be hosted by Jones and Scherzinger, with Cheryl Cole at the mentors' table. But early issues with Cole (everything from her accent to her attitude were cited) sent her packing, and Scherzinger took over her position.

That left Jones alone to take on the hosting duties by himself, no small feat for a show of this magnitude. Heck, Ryan Seacrest has been hosting "American Idol" for years, and sometimes even he gets thrown for a loop.

But Jones' weaknesses as a host were also what made him interesting and fun to watch. He was hopeless in consoling contestants when they were sent home, instead trying to get comments out of them at all costs during the live shows. When time ran short in the live shows and contestants or judges were dilly-dallying, Jones would get visibly frustrated, often rolling his eyes or giving an exasperated "finally!" when he was able to move things along.

Who will take Jones' spot? Even if Simon Cowell decides to kick Scherzinger out as a mentor (which might be a wise move), he can't simply demote her to host. It's all or nothing at this point.

Could it be that we'll be seeing both a new host and a new mentor next season? Announcements are not likely to come very soon, but with preliminary auditions under way for the show's second season, they might come sooner than you think.
