'Star Wars: Episode VII' Officially Has a Subtitle: 'The Force Awakens'
by Andy NeuenschwanderIt's official: the new "Star Wars" movie has a title!
The full title for the seventh installment in the long-running franchise is "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." The announcement was made via the official Star Wars Twitter account, and came just after the movie finished filming principal photography.
Already, fans have begun speculating about what the title means, and with good reason...there's actually a lot to glean from five short words.
First of all, it's interesting that it is, in fact, just five words; All of the other Star Wars movies have had an episode number attached, and since it was announced this installment has been referred to as "Episode VII." However, now there's no episode number, just the main and sub titles.
That could mean that Disney is setting these new Star Wars films up to be not a trilogy, but an open-ended franchise of movies, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That would make sense, considering the success of that particular franchise and the fact that DC Comics and Warner Bros. are starting the same strategy.
Secondly, the subtitle brings up interesting questions. What happened with the Force that it is now awakening, what we're assuming (given the age of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher) will be decades after the events of the original series?
There's a rumor going around that might explain the title, but due to major potential spoilers, we won't go into it. But we can probably assume that Luke Skywalker hasn't been building a new Jedi Order during this time.
