Star Wars Advance Ticket Sales Set New Record
by EG
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is already in the top 20 among films with the biggest opening weekends of 2015, and it won't even open for another three weeks. Advance ticket sales for the movie, which began in October, have set a new record, and when the movie opens on December 18, sales are almost certain to be of historic proportions.
Advance ticket sales for The Force Awakens stand at more than $50 million as of the third week of November, and some IMAX showings of the film in major markets are already sold out. Ticket pre-sales are the highest of any film in the history of online ticket selling, and most observers assume that the record-setting advance sales are a prediction of record-setting open-weekend grosses to come.
The best opening weekend of 2015 so far was turned in by Jurassic World, which earned $209 million in its debut; that stands as the all-time opening weekend take, as well. The Force Awakens will have to work hard to beat that mark, given that December openings are typically much more subdued than summer openings; Jurrasic World opened in June. Many observers think that Star Wars can shatter the record, however, and its impressive pre-sales already have it a quarter of the way there.
