'Squid Game' Video Game Tie-In Offers Prizes for Fans

Netflix is taking full advantage of the popularity of its Squid Game TV series by developing and promoting a full-blown multi-media franchise around the title. One example is the tie-in between the series and its related video game, which offers prizes for fans who both watch the show and play the game. Read on for details.

The second season of “Squid Game” launched last month and Netflix is doing everything in its power to get viewers to start watching as soon as the episodes drop — including offering free in-game rewards for the TV series’ new companion mobile game, “Squid Game: Unleashed,” for each episode you binge.

Released Dec. 17, “Squid Game: Unleashed” features “fast, heart-pounding action and brutal competition” in a 32-player online battle royale game that lets you play in games inspired by the series. The streamer has made this game free for even non-Netflix subscribers, marking a first for the company’s gaming strategy.

Netflix says it’s implementing this strategy with “Squid Game: Unleashed” to test out the power of combining its massive TV fandom with its fledgling mobile games business to amplify both aspects of its subscription offering.

Amid the reignited interest existing video games have seen recently when the IP is adapted into TV shows, like HBO’s “The Last of Us” and Amazon’s “Fallout,” Netflix is ready to gauge consumer appetite and response when a new season of a TV series and a game based on that series come out on the same service at the same time and offer fans incentives for engaging with both offerings simultaneously.

See below for a breakdown list of the eight in-game rewards “Squid Game: Unleashed” players will get as they watch new episodes of “Squid Game” Season 2. Per Netflix, “cash” is the term for in-game currency, while a “wild token” is a chance to spin the in-game wheel for more prizes.

It should be noted that the first in-game reward is given to all players for free and no episodes of Season 2 need to be watched to unlock the prize.
