'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Has Strong Thursday Debut

Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Homecoming swung its way to a strong $15.4 million in previews Thursday night after opening at 7 p.m.

Directed by Jon Watts, the new superhero film could climb as high as $100 million or more in its domestic debut. The film opened in 3,450 theaters Thursday night, and will expand into a total of 4,341 locations Friday, including 392 Imax cinemas and 601 premium large-format screens.

The web-slinging coming-of-age movie has earned the third-highest preview number of the year, behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($17 million) and Beauty and the Beast ($16.3 million). Homecoming's Thursday night tally surpasses the $11 million preview gross of recent hit release Wonder Woman, which ended up earning  $103.3 million in its domestic debut.

Sony's last Spider-Man movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, opened in May 2014 to $8.7 million in previews on its way to a $91.6 million domestic debut (the Andrew Garfield-starring pic eventually earned $709 million worldwide).
