Spider-Man Could Be An Avenger, Thanks to New Deal Between Marvel and Sony

All is finally right in the Marvel universe.

It was suspected that Marvel and Sony were working on hammering out a deal that would create a join custody situation of sorts for the character of Spider-Man. The character was, of course, created by Marvel Comics, but the cinematic rights have belonged to Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Now, it seems that Marvel and Sony have completed their deal and Spidey will become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. That means that, one day, Spider-Man could even be in "The Avengers" on screen.

Marvel announced that Spider-Man will appear first in a Marvel feature film, likely the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War" based on the Marvel comics story arc. In the comics, Spidey plays a prominent role in the story, which centers on Cap and Iron Man as they take sides over an effort to register all known superheroes.

From there, Sony will continue on with its plans of another Spider-Man movie, with an aim for a 2017 release. Marvel will consult with Sony going forward, with the two studios collaborating on the creative direction of the character.

Marvel's statement contained no indication of whether actor Andrew Garfield would continue to play the character in any Marvel-produced films, but he is set to continue in their "The Amazing Spider-Man" franchise.
