'South Park' Creators' Musical 'The Book of Mormon' Leads in Tony Nominations

'South Park' Creators' Musical 'The Book of Mormon' Leads in Tony Nominations "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are no strangers to musicals: their feature film "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" features a full set of very catchy tunes. They're also no strangers to awards: "South Park" has been nominated for Emmys time and again, and the "South Park" movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Parker and Stone can now add the Tony Awards to their list of accomplishments, as the announcement this morning of the nominees saw their new stage musical "The Book of Mormon" leading the field. The play has earned 14 nominations, more than any other on the list.

Nominated categories for "The Book of Mormon" include best musical, best score, best book, best lead and featured actors, best featured actress, best director, and best choreography.

The nominations aren't a huge surprise, as "Book of Mormon" received rave reviews at its opening back in late March. It is, however, a bit shocking that Parker and Stone could have put together such a often-lauded show on their first try at the stage. They had help from director Casey Nicholaw and writer Robert Lopez, but still...pretty impressive.

For the best musical category, "The Book of Mormon" is competing with "The Scotsboro Boys," and movie-to-stage adaptations "Sister Act" and "Catch Me If You Can."
