'South Park' Creators Hit Broadway with Mormon Musical

'South Park' Creators Hit Broadway with Mormon Musical "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have taken on the Mormon faith before: in their seventh season, they had an episode called "All About Mormons" which told the story of the Book of Mormon...set to a jaunty tune with the lyrics "dumb dumb dumb."

But as is often the case with the "South Park" boys, the targeted group is proven in the end to not be all that bad. Plus, Mormons get the ultimate last laugh in the "South Park" universe, as they turn out to be the only religion that gets into heaven.

Now, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are bringing their Mormon-based jokes to Broadway in a new musical entitled "The Book of Mormon." Of course there are plenty of jokes at the religion's expense, but Parker and Stone maintain that the lampooning is not the focus of the show.

"We didn't sit down and say, 'All right, let's bash Mormons, how should we do it? Let's spend seven years of our lives writing a Broadway musical so that we can rip on Mormons," said Parker.

The story follows two Mormon missionaries who are sent to Uganda. Upon seeing the devastation that the AIDS virus, genocide, and civil war have wrought on the country, they grapple with their own religious beliefs.

If that sounds too serious, don't worry: the antagonist, an evil genocidal warlord, is named General Butt Naked.

The show is set to premiere in this upcoming Broadway season. If "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" is any indication, Parker and Stone know how to handle a musical and should put on a great (if not a little offensive) show.
