Is 'Smash' the New 'Glee?' Watch a Preview Video of Katharine McPhee Singing 'Beautiful' While we've seen some musical episodes of TV shows in the past ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer" had a particularly good one), it wasn't until "Glee" came along that the idea of a full-on musical show seemed possible.

Now, NBC has stepped up in an attempt to create the next big TV musical with "Smash."

The show will star former "American Idol" contestant Katharine McPhee, and will center on a girl who moves to New York City with dreams of being on Broadway. Kinda sounds like the Rachel-Berry-after-graduation story, doesn't it?

NBC has released a full-length music video of McPhee singing Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful," set to clips from the show. The video gives an idea of what to expect from the first season (or perhaps even just the pilot) of "Smash" as we see McPhee's character struggle through bad auditions, waitressing jobs, and the general crappiness of being a struggling actor in New York, before wowing the people putting on a Broadway production about Marilyn Monroe, who give her a starring role.

McPhee is mighty talented vocally, and seems to show off a few moments of good acting from the little that we can see in the clip (after all, there's no dialogue).
