'Sleepy Hollow' Season 3, Episode 2: 'Whispers in the Dark' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanAbbie has invited Ichabod to move in with her for the time being.
Pandora encourages her tree to grow within its cave. She goes among the public, noticing a man on his cell phone who seems to have a secret. She asks the evil that has followed her to find it out, but to let him squirm.
He tries to call the FBI, but whatever Pandora has summoned kills him before he can connect with anyone.
Abbie and Ichabod go to the scene, where Ichabod meets Daniel Reyolds, the replacement for Abbie's superior. He and Abbie were at the Academy together.
Abbie gets a copy of the recording of the dead man, Paul Everette, calling for the FBI. She hears nothing worrisome, but there is some whispering in the background. As she adjusts it she hears a voice saying it will kill for secrets.
The concept reminds Ichabod of an entry in Grace Dixon's journal, of a dark ceremony where a whispering wraith is bonded with human shadows. Ichabod recognizes the host, Marcus Collins, a turncloak. Ichabod was sent on a mission to contact the spymaster (Betsy Ross) and extract spies whose cover Collins blew.
Betsy and Ichabod try to sneak out the other two spies, but the black wraith has murdered them in the stables. Betsy sneers at it but she and Ichabod have to flee before the Redcoats catch them.
Ichabod and Abbie wonder if the wraith has been sent on a modernized version of his mission... to catch and kill spies.
Joe Corbin calls Jenny, whose trailer has been broken into. He thinks they were searching for something (the something Jenny has been carrying around with her, most likely, which she doesn't mention). Joe can tell she is holding back from him and is frustrated she won't be honest.
Ichabod and Abbie track down the man, Williams, who was mentioned in the phone call the first victim made, and encounter the wraith. It lashes at them, and both are overwhelmed momentarily by their own secrets. Williams speeds off and the wraith chases him. It makes him crash his car and die.
Abbie looks around Williams' home for clues, where she runs into Daniel Reynolds, who can tell she is onto something.
A man hits Joe with a car and puts him in the trunk.
Abbie discovers that the two men who died were uncovering an embezzlement scheme that would have sipped off employee's pensions. Ichabod admits that the secret the wraith revealed to him was a moment of weakness- captured by the General, Ichabod nearly did give in and give up the names of the spies.
They realize they also now know the secret the wraith is killing for, and are in danger. They get the third person who knows - a woman, and bring her to an area they have lined with lights.
Jenny finds Corbin in the woods with Randall, someone she used to work with. He demands the Shard of Anubis from her. They fight. However when he threatens the tied-up Joe, Jenny relinquishes the black rock, the mysterious Shard.
The wraith shorts out the lights. Abbie and Ichabod put their heads together, wondering what Betsy Ross did that made it so the wraith left her alone. Ichabod remembers she shouted his name. Ichabod confronts Marcus Collins, who becomes a humanoid when his name is called. They all fight him and kill him.
Later, Ichabod discusses his secret with Abbie - he did not give over the names, but the shame of his hesitation, that he considered it for a moment, stuck with him forever. He suggest Abbie unburden herself to him. She tells him she did research and found her father, alive in Saratoga. She admits that she has been watching him.
Joe, having discovered that the Shard was something his father wanted stolen, wants to go after it with Jenny.
Ichabod, back in the building where the first man was killed, realizes that the coffee shop (where Pandora had smiled at him and made conversation) is no longer there. He and Abbie review the video and see her there, talking to the victim and watching the scene. Abbie remembers seeing her at the bar.
Pandora waters her tree and it begins to grow.
