'Sleepy Hollow' Season 2, Episode 17: 'Awakening' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanThe bell in the center of town rings, and several people within earshot go white in the eyes, and magically attack the person they are currently angry with. They shake out of it after a short violent episode.
Who's to blame? Henry of course.
Using the Grimoire, Henry is trying to use an awakening spell on the witches of Sleepy Hollow, who, of course, don't know that they're magical. However he doesn't have enough power. He goes to Katrina, who is trying to summon him (using blood magic, gasp!), and explains his plan to her. They can awaken the witches, and rebuild their coven. They can have the family they never had. With Katrina a pure-blood witch, she is strong enough to make the spell stick.
Ichabod and Abbie, meanwhile, have figured out that the bell, covered with symbols, is going to be bad news. Ichabod remembers a past mission from Washington to blow up a bell (wherein he cracked the original Liberty Bell, because what historical event didn't he play a role in?). They decide they need to blow up Sleepy Hollow's bell as well.
Irving proves an issue here, as he is guarding the bell. Jenny draws him off and an episode-long chase ensues. Jenny has an ulterior motive as well - she's going to try to use the Gorgon head to turn Irving to stone, with the hope that they will one day be able to free him, once his evil episode has passed.
Ichabod and Abbie go after the bell while Irving is distracted, but imagine their surprise when Katrina appears, having joined forces with Henry. She claims she could never be with a mortal man, and that Washington had promised that witches could integrate into society back in their time - a promise he reneged on. Is it a trick? Probably not, since she blows up Abbie's car when Abbie tries to run Henry down.
Luckily it's a distraction, and Abbie is actually inside, planting a bomb on the bell. Henry catches her, however, and she and Ichabod are tied up, while Henry and Katrina begin their spell. Ichabod has two guns hidden on him. He and Abbie discuss his willingness to do what needs to be done, and Ichabod agrees that Henry must be taken out. The two untie themselves, and when Ichabod shoots at the bell, Henry is distracted enough for Abbie to shoot him.
Thus Henry finally dies, surrounded by his family. This frees Irving just moments before Jenny is about to turn him to stone.
Katrina doesn't see this for the relief that it is. She blames Ichabod, and nearly kills him. She calls up a portal with the book, and as Abbie leaps to stop her, the two are sucked in and vanish, leaving Ichabod behind.
Katrina and Abbie, respectively, wake up in 1781. Katrina, back to being a hospital nurse, vows to never leave her son again. Meanwhile Abbie, who looks rather suspicious and odd, is arrested. She demands to speak with Ichabod Crane.
