'Silence of the Lambs' Director Jonathan Demme Dies at 73

Jonathan Demme, the Oscar-winning director of “The Silence of the Lambs,” has passed away. He was 73.

The filmmaker died Wednesday morning in New York, reports IndieWire. A source close to the family told the website that the cause of death was esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease.

Across an incredibly varied career that stretched back to the early 1970s, Demme directed everything from music videos to low budget exploitation films to award season prestige dramas.
