Showtime Partnering with Hulu For Cheaper Streaming Subscription
by Andy Neuenschwander
Premium cable network Showtime has already announced that it will be providing a standalone streaming service for those without cable, priced at $10.99 a month. But if that sounds a bit too expensive to you, there will be a way to get a discount.
Showtime has partnered with Hulu to provide a discounted subscription rate for their content, which will be added to the Hulu library. So instead of subscribing to the Showtime app, those who have a Hulu subscription will simply be able to add Showtime content to their Hulu account for an additional $8.99 a month, $2 less than the full-priced subscription.
This is the first deal of its kind, as HBO only offers subscriptions with new episodes through its own services, HBO Go and HBO Now (though older episodes of HBO shows have also been added to Amazon Prime). This also marks the first time Hulu will add content from premium cable to its lineup.
"We’re excited to be the first premium service available to Hulu’s growing subscriber base and look forward to offering their customers our award-winning original programming, films and documentaries across almost every device,” said Showtime CEO Matt Blank. “Hulu is an important launch partner for Showtime as we continue to expand our service across new platforms and distributors, reaching new consumers wherever a broadband connection is available."
Much like HBO Go, Showtime's service will feature brand-new and ongoing series like "Ray Donovan" and "Masters of Sex" as well as archives of older series like "Dexter" and "Weeds." Documentaries, sports and movies will also be available on the service.
As of yet, Showtime has not announced any kind of exclusivity like HBO Now did with Apple. The option for Hulu subscribers will be available in mid-July, right in time for the season premieres of "Masters of Sex" and "Ray Donovan."
