Shia LeBeouf's Sexy Flick Proves too Hot for Theaters
by Shannon KeirnanIn a move that probably surprises very few people, the Romanian cinema board has declared the newest flick from Lars von Trier unfit for public viewing and is refusing to allow it in theaters.
"Nymphomanic II," which stars "Lawless" actor Shia LaBeouf, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Stellan Skarsgard, was due to be released February 7th but found itself slapped by the National Center of Cinematography with a rating of "IM 18 XXX," banning minors and the general public from viewing.
It's a decision the film's distributor, Independence Film, says is "a case of censorship" unique in Europe. They intend to appeal.
Chairman of the Senate's Culture Committee Georgica Severin was against the decision, noting that "Nymphomaniac I" was already running in Romanian cinemas. How much more graphic can the second part be?
No one would expect the two-part film, a dramatic journey following a woman's erotic evolution from birth to the age of 50, to be tame. LeBeouf was open about his audition stages... the first of which involved sending photographs of his genitalia to the producers.
"The first info we got," he said said, "I'll never forget this because my entire team reacted with such a fear... the first request on the production end, not from Lars, was pictures of my penis."
Obviously LeBeouf still took the opportunity, happy to perform in unsimulated sex with his on-screen partners.
"There's a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says, we're doing [the sex] for real. Anything that is 'illegal' will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening."
Gee, I can't imagine why Romania thinks this film too explicit for theaters...
.... And what counts as being "illegal?"
