Selena Gomez tells Her Kidney Transplant Story

Selena Gomez, producer of 13 Reasons Why, shocked fans in September when she revealed that she'd undergone a kidney transplant way back in May. It had been public knowledge that Gomez had been battling complications of the autoimmune disease lupus, but no one was aware that the situation had become so dire, or that Gomez had been through such a serious procedure without anyone noticing.

After the revelation, Gomez had been mostly silent on the topic, but she was finally offer details about what she went through in an interview on the Today show this week.

Selena Gomez broke her silence about her kidney transplant.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of.  So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery.  And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.  Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. “My kidneys were just done. That was it,” a tearful Gomez told Savannah Guthrie in a sitdown with donor Francia Raisa, set to air Monday and Tuesday on “Today.”

“I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life, and that was the day I came home and I found out. [Raisa] volunteered and did it.”

Gomez, 25, underwent the transplant in secret in May, revealing the ordeal only in September.

The “Bad Liar” singer required the operation as a result of complications from lupus, which she’s struggled with openly for years.
