Selena Gomez Has Kidney Transplant

Singer/actress/producer Selena Gomez revealed her diagnosis with the autoimmune disease lupus two years ago, but she revealed this week that she's been keeping some important information about her health from fans. Gomez explained to fans on Instagram why she'd been out of the spotlight for awhile over the summer. Turns out she was getting a new kidney from one of her closest friends. The surgery was made necessary by complications from lupus, but Gomez appears to be recovering nicely from the procedure.
Selena Gomez has revealed that she had a kidney transplant this summer and posted a photo of herself recovering.
On Thursday, Gomez posted pictures of her donor, close friend Francia Raisa, holding hands in adjacent hospital beds while recovering post surgery.
"I'm very aware some of my fans had noticed i was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn't promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of,” said Gomez in her Instagram post to her 126 million followers worldwide. "So I found out I need to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health."
Gomez underwent surgery because of complications and side effects related to her Lupus. The autoimmune disease reportedly so damaged the singer's organs that she was told by doctors that she required a transplant.
Gomez first revealed her lupus diagnosis in 2015.
“I was diagnosed with [autoimmune disease] lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke," she said. “I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.' But I was angry I even felt the need to say that. It’s awful walking into a restaurant and having the whole room look at you, knowing what they’re saying. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
