The teaser trailer that was doing the rounds in October however, didn’t excite many. Those who had a sneak preview of what was to come, found this medieval supernatural saga to be utterly insipid in the least and merely mildly interesting at its most.

Avid movie buffs expect that when a movie claims to be a medieval supernatural thriller, as was the Season of the Witch’s claim to fame, there is more to it than just silhouettes of castles looming on the horizon, primordial forests with a smattering of mythical beasts, a knight in shining armor who is almost always on the run from a bunch of baddies, the bunch of baddies who are either hurling spears or curses, and of course, a hauntingly beautiful woman of unknown origins who is the object d’ desire of a number of people the knight, some prince, and also the villain—along with precious gems or an age-hold secret that will give the bearer immense power.

Movie watchers feel disappointed when they fail to notice a cohesiveness and crispness in the storytelling, webs of intrigue that fail to arouse suspense, and lukewarm acting that simply fails to convey the complex gamut of emotions that the characters claim to be experiencing.

Season of the Witch’s teasing trailer lays bare these chinks in the armor. Nicholas Cage, as he has done in many of his other movies, sleepwalks through the motions and looks as bored as he probably felt during the shoots. Even the presence of Ron Perlman could not salvage the fortunes of the movie. The dialog delivery left much to be desired.

Season of the Witch will be released on 7 January 2011; it was originally supposed to hit the theatres in March this year. It was not missed!
