'Scream' Mask Redesigned for TV Series Reboot

It's a mask that has spawned a thousand Halloween costumes, but now it's getting a new look.

MTV has given the "Ghostface" mask a facelift for the upcoming "Scream" TV series, based on the now-classic 90's horror-comedy movie. The reveal of the redesign comes just a little less than a month before the show's premiere date, June 30, and shows a slightly less exaggerated—and slightly more creepy—expression.

The mask is still ghost-white, but appears to be fastened with leather straps snapped onto the mask, as opposed to the old version which was part of a hood. The mouth is also noticeably different: it still hangs open but with less exaggeration to it, the expression is a little more human.

"The [original] mask is so iconic," said "Scream" EP Jaime Paglia. "If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience."

Jill Blotevogel, another EP on the show, notes that the new mask is a little simliar to other famous horror figures. "It evokes some of the Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask, but it’s still first and foremost evocative of the Scream mask," she said. "It’s sort of a reinvention while also paying homage."

"Scream" premieres June 30 on MTV. Here's a look at the trailer that was released back in April:
