Say Goodbye to 'The Newsroom': HBO Show Will End After 3rd Season
by Andy NeuenschwanderIt's the end of yet another Aaron Sorkin era.
HBO's "The Newsroom" will be ending its run after the upcoming third season, as confirmed by the network's president of programming Michael Lombardo.
The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin—smart, riveting and thought-provoking," said Lombardo. "I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember."
That "Newsroom" was coming back for a third season isn't much of a surprise. Jeff Daniels, who plays the lead in the cable-news-set drama, told reporters that there would be a third season back when he won an Emmy in September for the role.
However, this is the first we've heard, at least officially, that the show would be ending. Of course, "Newsroom" never had the ratings of, say, "Game of Thrones" or "True Blood" or one of HBO's other mega-hits, so three seasons could still be considered a moderate success for the show.
In Sorkin terms, that puts it somewhere in between "The West Wing" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" in terms of longevity.
There's about to be some room in HBO's schedule: "Boardwalk Empire" will also be ending after its upcoming fifth season. Both "Boardwalk" and "Newsroom" are aiming to premiere this fall.
