Sarah Hyland of 'Modern Family' Granted Restraining Order Against Ex-Boyfriend

Sarah Hyland of 'Modern Family' Granted Restraining Order Against Ex-Boyfriend "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland has been granted a restraining order in an ongoing case against her ex-boyfriend.

Hyland met Matthew Prokop while the two were working together on "High School Musical 3." They dated for five years after that, but Hyland claims that Prokop became physically and verbally abusive just one year into their relationship.

The restraining order states that Prokop hurled offensive slurs at Hyland over her clothing choices, and on at least one occasion choked her, according to TMZ.

"His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak," TMZ reports Hyland as saying in the documents. "I was scared and in fear for my life."

According to reports, things had gotten so bad that Hyland asked her on-screen mother Julie Bowen to help her break up with Prokop. That situation also turned violent, and Bowen helped move Hyland away from Prokop.

The case further states that Prokop threatened Hyland and her dog by claiming he was going to burn her house down, and threatened to commit suicide as well.

Hyland's lawyer claims he has "advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter," and asks instead for respect of Hyland's privacy as the case moves forward.
