Sandra Bullock's Gift to Japan

While a handful of celebrities have been called out for making fun of the disaster situation in Japan (read: 50 Cent and Gilbert Gottfried), other celebs are using their star power to make a difference.

Sandra Bullock joined the cause Thursday, as the Red Cross reports she donated $1 million to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Some celebrities are getting creative. As Reuters reports, Katy Perry is donating sales of glow sticks on her concert tour, while Lady Gaga’s bracelet design raised more than $250,000 within 48 hours.

Walt Disney Co donated $2.5 million to the American Red Cross, and said it would match employee contributions up to $1 million.

Warner Bros is pledging the DVD and Blu-ray sales of its movie “Hereafter.” The film depicting the 2005 tsunami that wrecked havoc on Southeast Asia was pulled from Japanese theatres.

The combined efforts add up. Earlier this week, The American Red Cross announced an initial contribution toward the relief of $10 million, which will go to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

So far, Bullock’s donation stands out as one of the largest from a single celebrity.

To make a donation of your own, the Red Cross urges:

"Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific."
