'Sailor Moon' Returns to Theaters for the First Time

Anime fans rejoice. Sailor Moon R: The Movie is finally going to get a theatrical release in the United States. The 1993 feature-length addition to the Sailor Moon world has been in theaters abroad, and it's been released in home-video formats in the United States, but the upcoming theatrical run marks the first time the movie will show on the big screen in America.

The film will have event screenings in hundreds of U.S. theaters in January 2017. The showings will feature a remastered and redubbed version of the film, and some showings will present a version in Japanese with English subtitles. The showings are being produced by Toei Animation and VIZ Media, and tickets will be available through Eleven Arts.

In Sailor Moon R: The Movie, Sailor Moon and her Sailor Guardians must save the world from an alien force that threatens the very existence of the planet.

The theatrical run is part of a program by VIZ to produce remastered versions of many Sailor Moon properties. The redubbed version of the film will feature many of the original voice actors, including Stephanie Sheh as Usagi Tsukino and Robbie Daymond as Mamoru Chiba.
