Rosario Dawson Hints At 'Sin City' Sequel's Start Date
by Sean ComerApril 1, 2005 feels like a lifetime ago, but Rosario Dawson has told the world right around when she'll reunite with directors Robert and Frank Miller, along with castmates Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen and others, to finally film "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For."
Dawson told media she encountered at the premiere of her more recent film "Ten Years" that the shooting starts sooner than many would've probably thought.
"I'm not sure if I'm supposed to say ... but I'm going to say November, I'm going to be honest and put it out there," she said, according to MTV. "It's very soon. Very excited."
Rodriguez's original adaptation of Miller's seven-book Dark Horse Comics legacy that ran from 1991 to 1992 told but half Miller's tales. "A Dame To Kill For" is expected to hash out the remaining stories from the original series run, with a focus on the titular precursor tale of Clive Owen's Dwight McCarthy and his "new face." It also fills in some of his history with Old Town hooker-in-charge Gail (Dawson) and how he fell into a romance with blonde barmaid Shellie (Brittany Murphy) that's briefly referenced in Rodriguez's first film.
There's always been talk as well that Miller crafted an original story suited just for Rodriguez's sequel.
Shot nearly entirely using a green-screen background and computer-rendered cityscapes - Rodriguez admitted in commentary on the 2-disc DVD release that he built an actual Kadie's Club Pecos set just so he and the cast could have a place to hang out and drink - the first film was a sensation with audiences and critics alike, generating a $158.8-million gross on a $40-million budget. Good thing, too: listing Miller as a "Co-director" in the credits meant Rodriguez sacrificing his Director's Guild of America membership.
Since "Sin City" and while long promising forward progress on the sequel, Rodriguez has completed his "Grindhouse" style-homage double feature with Quentin Tarantino, the family comedy "Shorts," the "Predators" remake he produced, the Danny Trejo "Grindhouse" faux-trailer-based "Machete," and the Jessica Alba-starring "Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World."
He's also started moving forward with the sequel "Machete Kills."
If Shellie appears in the titular main story, Rodriguez will have to approximate Murphy's presence. More than four years after the release of "Sin City," Murphy died Dec. 20, 2009, of cardiac arrest after being found unconscious in her bathroom.
