'Rogue One' Finishes Strong, Eyes Year's Top Spot

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took the top box-office spot for the third week in a row over the New Year's holiday weekend. In doing so, it rocketed up the yearly chart, racing past Captain America: Civil War to become the second-biggest movie of 2016. By the time all is said and done, Rogue One will also probably outdistance Finding Dory to become the highest-grossing film of the year.

Rogue One took in another $64 million over the four-day weekend, bringing its domestic total to $440 million. It will take in more than $500 million by the end of its run, becoming the only 2016-released film to do so.

Second place for the weekend went to Sing, which took in a very strong $56 million. In third place was Passengers with $21 million; that film is underperforming and won't make back its production budget with its domestic total before the end of its run. Fourth place went to veteran hold-over Moana, and fifth place went to Why Him?.

Outside the top five, the most notable performance was by La La Land, which took in $12.3 million and landed in seventh place. This is notable because the film has not yet opened wide and is playing in about a quarter (or less) as many theaters as each of the top five films.
