Robert Downey Jr. Stormed Out of an Interview That Turned Personal
by Andy Neuenschwander
For future reference: If you're interviewing Robert Downey Jr., just ask him stuff about the movie.
Interviewer Krishnan Guru-Murthy learned that the hard way after the "Avengers" actor walked out on a Channel 4 News interview when the questioning turned personal.
It started when Guru-Murthy asked RDJ about comments he made roughly seven years ago to the New York Times about his time in prison, and how it changed his political views. "Does that mean you're not a liberal, or you came out of prison not being a liberal?" Guru-Murthy asked.
Downey gave a pause, then asked, "Are we promoting a movie? I wouldn’t say that I am a Republican, a liberal, or a Democrat. I was just talking to the person was doing the interview that day, and that happened to be my opinion."
Guru-Murthy didn't take the hint, and kept going. "We would also like to talk a little about you," he said, "and I don't know how comfortable you are talking about yourself at the moment."
That only increased the tension, as RDJ looked off camera with the traditional "I want to get the hell out of this interview right now" look.
Guru-Murthy didn't back down, though, and asked another question about Downey's father, his drug use, and the "dark periods" of his life. That proved to be the final straw, as Downey stood up, took his mic off, and walked out of the interview without another word.
