RIP Harry Morgan, aka Colonel Potter from 'M*A*S*H'

RIP Harry Morgan, aka Colonel Potter from 'M*A*S*H' The man who played the brusque but lovable military surgeon Colonel Potter on the hit series "M*A*S*H," Harry Morgan, passed away today at the age of 96 after being treated for pneumonia.

Morgan, who replaced McLean Stevenson (aka Henry Blake) as the Colonel of the fictional 4077th, appeared in over 100 films in his long career, and in countless television shows, including a high-profile role on the legendary detective show "Dragnet" as the counterpoint to Sgt. Joe Friday, Officer Bill Gannon.

According to the New York Times, "he once estimated that in one show or another, he was seen in prime time for 35 straight years."

Morgan's film roles included performances in legendary films like "High Noon" alongside Gary Cooper, and as Ulysses Grant in "How the West Was Won."

Hewill always be remembered, though, for his truly remarkable portrayal of the tough, capable, and ultimately warm-hearted Colonel Potter, who was always capable of keeping Hawkeye Pierce, BJ Honeycutt and the dress-wearing Klinger in line and on point as a Korean War era military surgical unit. As Potter, Morgan was also amazingly talented at inventing non-profane curses.

Morgan once said of the role: “He was firm. He was a good officer and he had a good sense of humor. I think it’s the best part I ever had.”

RIP, Harry Morgan. You were one of a kind.
