Rihanna turned down the Super Bowl Halftime Show to stand in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.
“The NFL and CBS really wanted Rihanna to be next year’s performer in Atlanta,” a source told Us Weekly Thursday. “They offered it to her, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy. She doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance.”
“The offer and exposure would have been great for Rihanna as she’s planning a new album and tour but she stuck to what’s right in her eyes,” a source also told Entertainment Tonight.
Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem at NFL games last season to protest police brutality against people of color.
After other NFL players joined his quiet demonstration, President Donald Trump repeatedly denounced the practice.
The NFL enacted a rule in May that would fine players and/or teams for conspicuously protesting the national anthem.
A second source told ET that Pink, who performed the national anthem at last year’s Super Bowl while battling the flu, was also considered for the halftime show, but dropped out because negotiations took too long.
Maroon 5 were announced as Super Bowl Halftime Show performers in September.
