Ricky Gervais Planning 'The Office' Movie: Will We See More Michael Scott, Too?
by Andy NeuenschwanderIt's been roughly a year since "The Office" went off the air, and much longer than that since the UK version of the show ended its run. And yet, there might soon be some brand-new "Office" for fans to enjoy!
Ricky Gervais, who created the original "Office," announced today with BBC Films that he will be heading up a new feature film starring his character from the original UK show, David Brent. The project is titled "Life On the Road," and will follow David as he attempts to live out his dream as a rock star ten years after the events of "The Office."
"He thinks it'll be like Scorsese filming The Rolling Stones, but it turns out to be a 'where are they now' documentary," BBC Films said in their statement. We have to wonder: If it is indeed a "where are they now" sort of thing, does that mean that "Sherlock" and "The Hobbit" star Martin Freeman will reprise his role as well?
For those who never watched the original UK version of the show, David Brent was the Michael Scott equivalent. So, maybe we're just being hopeful here, but if "Life On the Road" does well, that could mean the possibility of Steve Carell doing a Michael Scott movie, right?
Think about it: It could follow Michael as he tries to live out his dream as a screenwriter, moving to Los Angeles and attempting to pitch "Threat Level Midnight" to anyone famous that he happens to come across. Who wouldn't pay to see that?
Meanwhile, Gervais continues to have a good run here in the States: His Netflix series "Derek" is up for an Emmy this year for its first season, and a win would put Gervais' Emmy win tally at three.
