'Ralph Breaks the Internet' Preps for Strong Holiday Debut
by EG
Disney's animated family sequel Ralph Breaks The Internet should have no trouble being the top box-office performer over the long holiday weekend, but it's likely to see strong competition from boxing sequel Creed II. Read on for more projections.
Walt Disney Animation's sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet will have no trouble winning this year's turkey trot at the Thanksgiving box office, while Creed 2 is expected to pack plenty of punches as well.
Both films, along with Hollywood's latest Robin Hood rendition, are opening on Wednesday in order to get a jump on the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Holdover Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which hit theaters last weekend, should also stay high on the chart in its second outing.
Pre-release tracking shows Ralph Breaks The Internet earning $67 million-$75 million for the Wednesday-Sunday corridor, one of the best moviegoing stretches of the year for family fare. The critically acclaimed follow-up to the 2012 animated pic Wreck-It Ralph sees John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman return to lead the voice cast, while newcomers include Gal Gadot and Taraji P. Henson.
MGM's Creed II, which sees the return of stars Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Sylvester Stallone, is tracking for a five-day debut in the $44 million-$54 million range. Most critics have embraced the sequel to the Ryan Coogler-directed Creed (2015), which revived the long-dormant Rocky franchise.
Robin Hood, from Lionsgate's Summit label, isn't looking so dashing. Tracking suggests the movie, directed by Otto Bathurst and starring Taron Egerton in the titular role, will post a five-day opening of $13 million-$15 million. Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn, Eve Hewson and Jamie Dornan also star in the film, which was originally set to open in March of this year.
As awards season heats up, DreamWorks and Participant expand Green Book nationwide on Wednesday, while Roma debuts in New York and Los Angeles, although Netflix won't report grosses.
