'Purge' Sequel to Invade Theaters in June 2014

According to the Hollywood Reporter, casting for the sequel to "The Purge" is well underway, and the project is on track to be in theaters next June. Ethan Hawke, the star of the first film, will apparently not be on hand for the follow-up, but writer/director James DeMonaco will be.

"The Purge," a home-invasion thriller about a lawless night in a fictional society, surprised everyone when it took in $89 million this summer, a figure that surpassed its $3-million budget dozens of times over. The movie also set the tone for a summer in which scary movies did exceptionally well.

The "Purge" sequel will star Frank Grillo ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Michael K. Williams ("Boardwalk Empire"), Carmen Ejogo ("Sparkle"), Zach Gilford ("Friday Night Lights") and Kiele Sanchez ("A Perfect Getaway").

"The Purge 2" will not be the only home-invasion flick to hit theaters in 2014; "Home Invasion" will star Bella Thorne ("Shake It Up"), Natalie Martinez ("Under the Dome") and Chandler Riggs ("The Walking Dead"). Both low-budget films will attempt to capture the big-money lightning that the original "Purge" did, but their success is far from guaranteed; "You're Next," another home-invasion bloodbath, earned only $18.5 million during its run later in the summer of 2013.
