One well-received teaser-for-the-teaser and a rave-reviewed teaser trailer later, the Ridley Scott space romp looks more and more like a must-see.
With the film hitting theaters June 8, it's about time the TV campaign began. It was once believed that Scott would craft "Prometheus" as a prequel to his sci-fi horror opus "Alien," but instead ended up directing a stand-alone story that's set amid the same universe and 30 years before the first tangle between Ellen Ripley and a xenomorph on board the Nostromo.
Written by Jon Spaihts with "Lost" mastermind co-creator Damon Lindelof, the film stars Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce in a story about a team of scientists seeking keys to humankind's origins in space. As they delve into another extraterrestrial race's origins, they end up in a race to save mankind from its greatest threat.
"Prometheus" certainly bears the "Alien" earmarks - especially the shadowy visuals and oppressive darkness. Scott helming a vision from the universe he crafted can only be encouraging. It means he remains in complete control of a story crafted at least in part by a proven writer of another beloved franchise. Sure, thre big licensed-property movies are getting all the buzz this summer, but this could carve a memorable niche itself.
