'Pride and Prejudice' Retelling to Come to Lifetime....?
by Shannon Keirnan
This comes as somewhat… alarming news for diehard Pride and Prejudice fans.
Lifetime, who so recently aired the stinker “Liz & Dick,” has picked up a modern-day version of the popular novel from the 1800’s.
That doesn’t sound too terrible… yet. But you’re on shaky ground, Lifetime.
The drama will star “Ghost Whisperer” actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and will be written by “Charmed” writer Sheryl Anderson.
Hewitt has her fingers all over this project. She will executive produce, and it will come from her companies Fedora Films and Cineflix. Fedora’s head of development and production, Jeanie Bradley, was the one to bring Lifetime the idea.
Most know that Pride and Prejudice revolves around the classic love story between independent Elizabeth Bennett rich, haughty Mr. Darcy. Thus, the name of the show will be “Darcy’s Town” and will be set in Virginia.
This isn’t the first Jane Austen remake to be making it to television. Obviously Austen’s most-loved novel, “Pride and Prejudice” has been all over television and the big screen, including adaptations starring Colin Firth, and most recently, Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfayden.
“Boardwalk Empire’s” Margaret Nagel has also worked out a modern-day “Sense and Sensibility” with CBS. It will focus on three sisters whose father returns after abandoning them as children—not quite the same plotline as the original.
What do you think? Can the combination of Lifetime and Jennifer Love Hewitt do justice to a great novel by adapting it to modern times…?
Anyone want to take bets on this?
