Pre-Christmas Video Sales: 'Lone Ranger' Near the Top
by EGIn a clear sign that there's a difference between theater ticket sales and DVD sales, some of the top-selling new releases on video last week were movies that were among the biggest box-office bombs of the summer.
The biggest sellers in the week leading up to Christmas, however, were hits in the theaters, too. The top-selling new video, according to Nielsen's DVD and Blu-Ray charts, was "Despicable Me 2"; the animated sequel is also the third-highest-grossing movie at the box office in 2013, behind "Iron Man 3" and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." The number-two slot on the video charts went to "Fast & Furious 6," which holds the 7th-place slot on the year's box-office chart.
But in third and fourth places on the video-sales charts for the week are two films that were major disappointments when they were released in theaters. "The Lone Ranger" became the symbol of the summer's big-budget failures when it took in only $89 million during its theater run, and "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" didn't perform very well, either; the two films rank 36th and 46th, respectively, among films released in 2013.
Two other new releases, "Elysium" and "One Direction: This Is Us," came in at 6th and 8th places respectively.
