'Pitch Perfect 3' Greenlit at Universal
by Andy Neuenschwander
The Barden Bellas will be returning for at least one more bout of acapella-based combat.
Universal has greenlit "Pitch Perfect 3," officially making the female-driven franchise a trilogy. The studio is currently negotiating with writer Kay Cannon, who wrote the first two movies, to return for the third. Elizabeth Banks is likely to direct again, though Universal has reportedly not approached her with an offer yet.
The move isn't much of a surprise considering the financial success of "Pitch Perfect 2," which is currently still in theaters. The sequel cost only $29 million to make and has earned over $160 million domestically thus far, and even managed to beat "Mad Max: Fury Road" in its first weekend at the box office.
However, it's likely that costs will go up for the third movie. Stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson have gained profile since the first movie, so their $2 million salaries for "Pitch Perfect 2" will likely increase for the threequel.
There's also the question of what to do with the story, as many of the main characters are now done with college. Perhaps a Bellas reunion is in order?
