'Parks & Recreation' What's New in 2017? Recap
by Andy Neuenschwander
"Parks & Recreation" kicked off its final season tonight, showing us what the world will look like in the far-off future year of 2017.
Let us tell you, so far 2017 does not look like a very good time.
The gang is still there on the show (well, minus Rob Lowe's Chris Traeger and Rashida Jones' Ann Perkins), but things are very, very different than they were when we last saw them in 2014.
Here's what's changed:
Ben Wyatt is City Manager
There's a reason Ben is all dressed up in a spiffy suit and bow tie: he's being honored at a gala for planning Pawnee's bicentennial celebration. Tom was supposed to give an introduction for him, but Tom hasn't changed a bit and took the time to just talk about himself and the success of his restaurant, Tom's Bistro (still going strong!).
Leslie and Ron HATE Each Other
Ron is working in the private sector now, running his furniture business with a very Ron-like name ("Very Good Furniture Construction Company"). It turns out that, a couple of years ago, Ron stabbed Leslie in the back (at least according to Leslie) in an incident that will likely be fleshed out more later.
Unfortunately, their friendship isn't likely to patch up anytime soon, as Ron and Leslie are heading up two opposing efforts to win over the Newport family and get a large piece of land. Leslie wants to make a park, while Ron is working to get the land for a Google-esque company's new campus.
Leslie Has Bangs
They are rockin'. That is all.
Andy and April Are Getting Boring
Not in our eyes...Chris Pratt and Aubrey Plaza are still hilarious. But the formerly immature couple is panicking now because they feel as though they've become boring old people, buying crock pots and planning out their weeks and getting renter's insurance.
After some failed attempts to rekindle their former impulsiveness, they come across an abandoned house for sale by a creepy dude (an excellent cameo from Werner Herzog) and find that it has everything they would ever want: ghosts, a fireman's pole, and like five dumb waiters. Guess who's going to be new homeowners?
Andy Has a TV Show
Andy clearly isn't THAT boring an adult, because he has taken his Johnny Karate character and made it into a musical TV show for kids. Jerry shows up every once in a while and gets attacked by ninjas. It looks like a pretty great show.
Jerry Has Yet Another Name
We've lost count at this point. We think it's Barry?
