Orchestra/Choir Arrangements Lend 'Call Me, Maybe' Just A Little Class
by Sean ComerIt's enough to make one wonder: if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and everybody and their mother's brother's retarded dog has covered Carly Rae Jepson's "Call Me, Maybe" - the "retarded dog" part was only half a joke; I have proof - then why aren't good songs picked up and covered this quickly after their releases?
Sure, why not an orchestra and choir? Everybody else has done it by now, though up to this point, none better than Cookie Monster. Still, if anything has to run a very close second-place to the blue lug's "Share It, Maybe," it would certainly be this. To the credit of arrangers Colin Britt and Arianne Abela and their all-volunteer 3Penny Chorus and Orchestra, they do manage to make it stirring.
If Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez ever decided to "re-imagine" some Merchant Ivory classic for a new generation, this would probably be the love theme. Admittedly, it is a pleasure to hear real strings instead of a synth approximation. What's more, God love 'em, do they look like they had fun with it once the tempo kicks up with the second verse.
It's bizarrely become some latter-day "Mary Had A Little Lamb" or "When The Saints Go Marching In": a simple arrangement, pretty unremarkable in itself, but with some fun possibilities in the hands of someone willing to play with genre-bending and a few touch-ups.
That being said, please, let this be the end. Let this song just go the way of "Rico Suave" and fade out.
