Many would argue that if you take the violence, profanity and sex out of the Deadpool movies, you're not left with much. But that's what Fox is doing for Once Upon A Deadpool, a re-edit of Deadpool 2 aimed at young viewers. How will the marketing ploy play at theaters this weekend? Read on for predictions.
Ryan Reynolds and 20th Century Fox's holiday entry Once Upon a Deadpool opened to an estimated $1 million from 1,566 theaters on Wednesday, putting it in a close race with The Grinch for No. 1.
Predicting how much the PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 will make this weekend is tough, since it is an unusual proposition to recut a popular superhero pic. The hope is that the kid-friendly version will lure new fans, although rereleases aren't generally huge earners.
The film will have plenty of competition. On Friday, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens alongside Mortal Engines and The Mule. Spider-Verse is expected to win the frame with roughly $35 million.
This summer, the R-rated Deadpool 2 grossed $734.2 million at the worldwide box office, including $318.5 million in North America. In the rejiggered version, Deadpool sits at the bedside of Fred Savage â who is reenacting his role in The Princess Bride â and reads to him from the "King James Edition" of a Deadpool storybook.
