'The Office' Spinoff Not Moving Forward
by Nicholas PageSorry The Office fans! You're going to have to get your fix of beets, bears, and Battlestar Galactica elsewhere when this season wraps up.
It was announced Monday that NBC has decided not to order an Office spinoff series titled "The Farm."
Wilson tweeted, "Farm Update: NBC has passed on moving forward with The Farm TV show. Had a blast making the pilot — onwards & upwards!”
Hope came earlier in the year when Rainn Wilson announced that his popular character Dwight Schrute would be returning in his own show to come 2013. The show would have followed Dwight as as he goes about business on his beet farm. "The Farm" pilot also starred Majandra Delfino from Rosewell and Blake Garrett from New Girl. Paul Lieberstein, who plays Tobi, wrote the single episode.
This isn't a huge surprise given that critics haven't been too enthusiastic about the possible show. Most noting that his character alone couldn't carry a show.
Buzz, as well as ratings, have significantly declined over the past year for The Office. Last year, season 8's premiere brought in just under 8 million veiwers. This year, season 9's premiere brought in just over 4 million.
There is a glimmer of light here though. Though no exact date is set, the pilot will air later in the regular Office season so fans will get a chance to see what could have been.
