Octomom Is Filing for Bankruptcy, Citing $1 Million in Debt

Octomom Is Filing for Bankruptcy, Citing $1 Million in Debt Had she waited just a few years, Nadya Suleman could have learned from Kate Gosselin that instant fame and reality shows aren't the solution to all your problems. In fact, sometimes they can be quite the opposite.

Of course Suleman, who is also simply known as the "Octomom," never had her own reality show. Instead, Suleman did small press tours and interviews with her octuplets, getting paydays by granting photo shoots and interviews. Ultimately, that wasn't enough: the Octomom is now filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Suleman reported approximately $1 million in debt when she appeared in court, and claims that she owes at least $10,000 in rent on her three-bedroom house. Unfortunately, even after her brief moment in the spotlight, Suleman's net worth is only about $50,000.

Suleman was already living with her mother and was on food stamps when she decided to have her octuplets via in vitro fertilization. Not only that, but she already had six other children, also via the in vitro method. That means that in both cases, Suleman meant to have large sets of children and paid to attain the goal.

She had claimed earlier, back when the octuplets were born, that she would not take government handouts like food stamps to support the kids. She has since gone back on that promise. At one point, Suleman was offered $1 million to do porn, but turned down the offer. Just last month she posed nude (but covered up) for a UK magazine for a much smaller payment.

As it turns out, when you already have six children and are living on Social Security and food stamps, the best solution isn't to purposefully have eight more children. Who knew?
